English as a Second Language (ESL) Training

CareerQuest offers a highly comprehensive English as a Second Language Program that is delivered in a small group setting. This program focuses on the four key areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing through a creative blend of activities.

Program Content:

The program curriculum is designed to set learning objectives that are consistent with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for ESL literacy. It encompasses pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension. Through creative exercises students are able to develop and rehearse their conversational English skills and refine their spelling and grammar usage. Spelling classes include pronunciation, syllabication, mnemonic strategies, and the reinforcement of spelling patterns and rules. The materials, exercises, and activities used are geared towards providing adult students who have little or no English language abilities with relevant job-specific language skills or to prepare them for an academic upgrading program.

The program is customized to the individual’s learning needs and taught by qualified instructors in a small group setting. Comprehensive monthly reports are provided that detail the student’s progress in each subject area and whether he/she is on schedule to meet academic targets. As well, standardized academic tests are administered at the beginning of the program to establish each individual’s training needs, and throughout the program to monitor progress. For a list of standardized tests used, please refer to the section covering academic assessments.

Computer skills training in keyboarding and the MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer) can be included as part of an ESL training program at no additional cost.

The English as a Second Language Program is available on a continuous intake basis with program schedules customized to meet each client’s needs.
